ELIZABETH MCCAIN originally hails from a long line of eccentric storytellers in Mississippi and Tennessee.”Bless their hearts!” She is spoken word performer, a public speaker, an interfaith minister and energy therapist,and a forgiveness coach in Takoma Park, Md. While living in Asheville from 2004-2007, she discovered and fell in love with storytelling as an art form, when she attended a workshop that the talented Asheville storyteller,Connie Regan-Blake gave. In the past five years, Elizabeth has received storytelling coaching from Connie, as well as from actors storytellers, and directors in Washington DC and in Santa Fe. When she and her spouse, Marie moved back to the DC area,she began taking solo performance classes, from Story District, ( formerly called SpeakeasyDC), and performing as a storyteller. She discovered she had enough stories to write a one-woman show, “A Lesbian Belle Tells… ” about her true stories of growing up in a small Mississippi town, coming out in DC in the 1990’s, experiencing family estrangement, and finding love and healing.
She has performed her show in Washington DC, in the 2014 Capital Fringe festival, where it was voted best solo show by DC Broadway World. She has also performed her show at community centers,spiritual retreats, and at the Metropolitan Community Church, an LGBTQ church is DC. She has also performed in storytelling and spoken word shows at Story District, Stoop Stories Storytelling series, The Human Rights Campaign, The Risk Live Storytelling Show, The Improv, and at government agencies.
Asheville is the first Southern city for Elizabeth to perform “A Lesbian Belle Tells…”. She hopes to take it on the road to more Southern cities. Integrating captivating comedy and vulnerability with triumph over tragedy in this show, Elizabeth inspires hope from the comfort of a rocking chair.
Elizabeth was ordained as an ordained interfaith minister in 2009, from The Chaplaincy Institute in Berkeley, Ca. She has officiated at several lesbian and gay weddings in Washington, DC.And she is an energy therapist, a public speaker,and a grief mentor and forgiveness coach in Takoma Park, Md.With a background as a psychotherapist for over twenty years, Elizabeth is also a certified positive psychology practitioner.Whether performing, ministering, or coaching, Elizabeth believes that sharing and reframing our stories heals hearts and changes the world. She specializes in loss and grief, transitions, forgiveness, spiritual practices from various traditions, shamanic breath work, soul development,and healing spiritual trauma for the LGBTQ/Allies communities. She leads workshops on finding joy in the midst of loss,slowing down for soul care, and positive psychology. Elizabeth and her spouse Marie hope to make Asheville their home again in the near future.
