The evening will begin with the screening of the film, “A Mighty Fine Memory: Stories and Tunes from the Fiddler of Banjo Branch.” Followed by a brief Q&A. Then we will have a concert featuring Roger Howell & Friends. His “friends” will include Jerry Sutton on guitar, Cathy Arrowood on bass, Mike Hunter on mandolin, & Troy Harrison on banjo.
Roger Howell is a cultural treasure recognized through Western North Carolina for his skill as a musician, his generosity as a teacher, and his prodigious Archives. Not only this “Memory Collection,” but also all of Mr. Howell’s performances and lessons , are full of stories about the people who taught him this music, the “old people” of his youth. In 2015, Roger was the fiddler of the festival at Fiddler’s Grove in Union Grove, North Carolina. He was also the recipient of the prestigious “Brown-Hudson Folklore Award” for his work preserving and celebrating regional music traditions.” The man ways that Roger Howell has immersed himself in the music of this region since his childhood make his story one worthy of sharing with the wider world.
